The
eyes are the windows to the soul. We've all heard this saying before and
intuitively, we trust a person with big, honest eyes. What seemed to be just an
old wives' tale, was actually confirmed by scientific research that found that
patterns in the iris can give an indication of whether we are warm and trusting
or neurotic and impulsive.
Unfortunately,
there's not much we can do about the natural shape and size of our eyes, as
those are determined genetically. However, there are ways to create the illusion
of big, beautiful eyes with makeup. I will take you through some simple tips
and tricks to enhance your features and make your eyes look bigger.
1.
Groom Your Eyebrows
This
is a very important step to making your eyes look larger. Using slant-tipped
tweezers, pluck stray hairs from beneath your brow to help elongate and slim
the face. Follow the natural curve of your eyebrow. Your eyebrow should arch at
a spot above the outer edge of your iris. Fill in any gaps by using an eyebrow
pencil. Lightly apply colour in small, upward strokes to avoid a drawn-on look
- a big no-no in my books.
2.
Prep Your Eyelids
To
keep your makeup looking smooth and lasting longer, apply an eyelid primer over
the entire lid, right before applying your shadow.
3.
Conceal Dark Circles
A
soft mineral concealer won't clog your pores and will cover those dark circles
or small imperfections of the skin, moving the focus to the eyes.
4.
Brighten Your Eyes with Light Eye Shadow
To
make your eyes look bigger, apply a shimmery or matte eye shadow that's very
light in colour over your eyelids. Apply a darker shade around the outer
corners of your eyes, in the shape of a V, then blend well using a blending
brush. You can also use a white eye pencil in the inner corners of your eyes. This
will instantly give you the illusion of a facelift.
5.
Line Your Eyes
Apply
eyeliner as close to the lash line as possible, making sure you don't leave
space between the eyeliner and the lash line. Your lashes will look fuller and
lush. Keep the line as thin as possible. Avoid lining the inside rim of the
lids. Besides making the eyes look smaller, after some time it will smear and
accumulate in the inner corner of the eye, creating a messy look. Make sure
that the eyeliner on the lower lash line connects with the back corner of the
upper lash line. This creates a more natural, cohesive look.
6.
Curl Your Lashes
Curling
your lashes can produce spectacular results. Your eyes will look bigger and
more wide-awake in an instant.
7.
Apply Mascara
A
good mascara can make your eyes look larger in no time. Apply one coat on all
lashes. When you apply the second coat, focus in the center to make eyes appear
bigger. Use a thin wand mascara for more precision and to avoid clumping.
8.
Take Good Care of Your Eyes
This
goes without saying. You need to take care of your eyes constantly and adopt a
healthy life regimen to avoid having puffy and tired eyes. The swollen skin
around the eyes can make them look very small. Make sure you sleep enough,
reduce salt intake, exercise and reduce the time you spend in front of the
computer.
Our
eyes are one of the most precious gifts we've been given in this life,
regardless of size, shape or colour. Let's keep them healthy and clear for a
better view into our soul!
